Scrum Consultancy and Team Introduction is a private onsite training and coaching service.
The objective of this six day engagement is to use Scrum techniques on the job in Product Development.
Over the six days of the Scrum Consultancy and Team Introduction, I lead the team through important steps in the Scrum framework while we work on a real project. The structure of the class varies from session to session, but each one provides a mix of learning, certification, coaching and delivering a real product.
Scrum Consultancy & Team Introduction Outline
A typical schedule will look like this:
DAY 1 & 2 | CERTIFIED SCRUM MASTER TRAINING
All attendees within the Scrum Team (Developers, Scrum Master and Product Owner) as well as outside visitors within an organization are welcome to attend the CSM class. As described on the in-company class page, this will be a made-to-measure class to teach Scrum using an actual project. You will be prepared to take the CSM certification exam with Scrum Alliance.
DAY 3 | SPRINT PLANNING PREPARATION
Immediately following the CSM class, I spend time with the Scrum Team to prepare for Sprint planning. We review the backlog, add detail where needed, may have to create a product backlog out of a design document, and make sure that all Scrum Team members understand the features (stories) that are prioritized for delivery in the first Sprint.
DAY 4 | SPRINT PLANNING
Sprint Planning is facilitated both by the Scrum Master and me, with the Developers and Product Owner doing the actual work of selecting work for the first Sprint, maybe estimate it, and then work out the delivery details. This typically takes about a day when coaching is included in the actual work. The day ends with a presentation of the Sprint plan to stakeholders.
DAY 5 | REVIEW & RETROSPECTIVE
I don’t stay with the Scrum Team during the delivery days, I am available for questions and return after the Sprint has concluded. In the Sprint Review, I will facilitate with the Scrum Master and lead the developers and all stakeholders through an inspection of the delivered results. A discussion will evolve around what works well, or which features need more work. Clarification has to emerge on why certain solutions were chosen and what it takes to change or add detail. A plan is agreed for moving on with delivery the next batch of features in the next Sprint.
I will facilitate the Sprint Retrospective for the whole Scrum Team, building trust between team members so they can explore improvements in the way the work gets done. Improvements are around strengthening skills that are beneficial for the team, and to improve upon skills which the team considers weak. No reporting is done out of this session, the improvements will speak for the team.
DAY 6 | SPRINT PLANNING
The Sprint Planning session for the second Sprint is facilitated by the Scrum Master. I will be there to assist, to coach, and to ensure the proper outcomes of the session. At the end of this last consultancy day the Scrum Master, the Product Owner and the Development should feel that they can progress with Scrum by themselves.
KNOWLEDGE FOR YOU
Prerequisites. The coaching is driven from an actual project, which has to be in a state where the project goal and a basic list of features is agreed upon. Perfection is not needed, the iterative nature of software development with Scrum allows the stakeholders (primarily the Product Owner) to steer development in any direction by updating the requirements at any time. It is helpful for all participants to do some basic reading, like the Scrum Guide published by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. Much more isn’t really needed.
Preparation. I will conduct a few phone interviews with stakeholders to become familiar with the product requirements and the participants. During the interviews he will guide the team in the preparations.
People. The core audience for this training is specifically for the Scrum Team: Product Owner, Development Team and Scrum Master. Other people are welcome to observe and participate in the classes.
